Bid is a pro-apoptotic protein within the Bcl-2 family, which plays an important role in bridging the extrinsic and intrinsic apoptosis pathways. Death receptors, such as Fas and tumor necrosis factor receptor-1, can activate Bid through proteolytic cleavage by caspase-8. Truncated Bid is translocated to the mitochondria, resulting in the induction of cytochrome c release.
