Specificity: This item recognises Buprenorphine and Norbuprenorphine. Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opiate first marketed as an analgesic. It is prescribed for the treatment of moderate to severe pain or for anaesthetic induction. It is available in transdermal patches for long-term treatment of pain not responding to non-opioids. It is also used in opioid dependence treatment as withdrawal symptoms are milder than those of methadone.
Norbuprenorphine is the active, dealkylated metabolite of buprenorphine. It acts as a stronger partial agonist against the mu opioid receptor than buprenorphine, but it does not cross the blood-brain barrier easily.
