Specificity: This item recognises Amphetamine, a synthetic psychostimulant drug. It causes alertness, an increase in the ability to concentrate, decreased fatigue and decreased appetite. It acts by increasing levels of dopamine and norepinephrine in the brain and increasing euphoria. Medically it may be used to treat daytime drowsiness, attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and traumatic brain injury.
Amphetamine may be used recreationally, where tolerance can develop rapidly, leading to psychological addiction. Chronic abuse can lead to weight loss, hallucinations and paranoid psychosis. Overdose may result in agitation, hyperthermia, convulsion, coma and cardiac and respiratory failure.
