Specificity: This item detects an epitope within the extracellular domain of human SLC5A11, a 75kD Na+/myo-inositol cotransporter also known as SMIT2. SLC5A11 can also cotransport D-glucose and D-xylose, and the myo-inositol (MI) epimer D-chiro-inositol.

MI is the most biologically abundant cyclic polyol, which function as precursors to molecules involved in cell signalling, cell adhesion and vesicular trafficking. MI also controls intracellular osmolarity by serving as a compatible osmolyte, which allows renal cells to function under hypertonic conditions.

SLC5A11 is mainly expressed in the kidney, and particularly in the kidney cortex, where it is reported to be responsible for the apical transport of MI into the proximal tubule. It is also highly expressed in the heart, skeletal muscle, liver and placenta.
